Grant spent upwards of five to seven hours a day working on the book, aided by his son Frederick and other assistants who checked facts. He and his wife Julia also relocated in June to a friend's cottage in upstate New York at Mount McGregor to continue writing in a peaceful setting. Grant worked vigorously throughout early 1885 to write the memoirs. The need to write the memoirs quickly became more urgent when Grant was diagnosed with inoperable throat cancer that worsened with time. To sweeten the deal, Twain offered Grant a seventy percent royalty from the profits. Webster and Company, to write his memoirs. Twain convinced Grant to sign a contract with his nephew’s new publishing firm, Charles L. He wrote several articles for Century Magazine, but Mark Twain told Grant that he was not being paid enough for his work by The Century Company. Realizing that he needed to find a way to pay back the loan and support his family, Grant turned to writing. Two days later Grant discovered that he had lost his entire fortune as the firm collapsed. Grant approached businessman William Vanderbilt for a loan and gave the loan money to Ward. On May 4th, Ward approached Grant and asked him for a $150,000 cash infusion to keeping the firm afloat after experiencing temporary difficulties with the bank that managed their transactions. Ward had been engaged in a “Ponzi Scheme,” paying out dividends from new investments rather than sales or interest. Initially the firm produced great wealth and on paper Grant was a millionaire. Grant eagerly accepted the offer in early 1884 and the investment firm of Grant and Ward was created. (nicknamed “Buck”) had entered into a business partnership with Ferdinand Ward, a popular banker and investor who was nicknamed “The Young Napoleon of Finance.” Buck asked his father if he would be interested in joining the partnership. He even declined suggestions from his friend Mark Twain about writing his memoirs.Ī significant event dramatically changed Grant’s mind, however. When the editors of Century Magazine requested his participation in their “Battles and Leaders of the Civil War” article series, Grant politely declined. “It’s all in Badeau,” Grant would often say. A former Adjutant General of Grant’s, Adam Badeau, had already written a three-volume collection about Grant’s generalship. Believing that he was a poor writer, Grant consistently refused to do anything of the kind. Grant continually encouraged him to do the same. For many years after the Civil War, friends, family, and associates of Ulysses S. In the late 1870s and 1880s, a growing number of Civil War veterans-from all ranks of service and from both sides of the conflict-began telling their wartime stories to a larger audience through published memoirs.

When you convert a string into an array, it makes data manipulation convenient. Arrays can help you implement better data organization and faster operations. This provides more security and ease of access to the data. For instance, you can convert the passwords entered as input in a web application into an array before storing them in the database. There are many cases when an array is considered more suitable over a string. Why Do You Need to Convert a String to an Array in PHP? You can play in third-person view (on the Player Menu, look for 'Use PP Vis' and toggle it on), which sounds fun but is honestly only fun for a minute or two, because Dying Light 2 is very much built for a first-person perspective. Same with the 'Immortal' entry in the menu-apparently these are holdovers from the original Dying Light's dev menu and don't actually function in Dying Light 2. While there is a 'God mode' shown on the menu, it unfortunately doesn't work. Just click and they'll be added to your inventory. You can also add scrap for crafting, by typing 'scrap' in the filter, which will bring up bundles for 5, 10, 15, or 20 pieces of scrap. Type cash and you'll see options to add 10, 50, 100, 200, or 1000 bucks to your wallet. You can ride it around and tap space to get off or F to get back on. Clicking it will spawn a rideable bicycle directly under Aiden. If you happen to find it doesn't work, be sure to check the mod page to see if there's a recent version, or just try reinstalling it again with the latest files. That said, Techland's updates to Dying Light 2 have broken the mod once or twice, forcing the modder to release new versions. With the mod installed you'll have all sorts of Dying Light 2 cheats at your fingertips to give yourself any weapon, get money, refill your health, or even instantly change the weather and time of day. It only works with the Steam version but the modder, Sepvph, is working on a version for the Epic Games Store as well. The Dying Light 2 Developer Menu mod enables a dev menu from the game files. According to him, people in society are stratified into social classes based on these three dimensions as follows:Ī person’s power can be shown in the social order through their status, in the economic order through their class, and the political order through their party. The theory of stratification (also known as ‘Weber’s theory of social class), popularly known as ‘Weberian stratification’ was developed by German sociologist Max Weber. Contemporary (modern) society depends on this type of rationalization and there is the power of bureaucracy over the individuals that address the problems and concerns of everyone to maintain order and systematization. The obedience of people is not based on the capacity of any leader but on the legitimacy and competence that procedures and laws bestow upon persons in authority. Max Weber: Max Weber was the great German sociologist and political economist was born on 21 April 1864. Third, legal-rational authority is grounded in clearly defined laws. Britain’s Queen Elizabeth, for instance, occupies a position that she inherited based on the traditional rules of succession for the monarchy. A leader is someone who depends on long-established customs, traditions, or order. Second, traditional authority is the one where the traditional rights of a powerful and dominant individual or group are accepted by subordinate individuals. we focus on technology but less on climate because of the result of iron cage made up of techno-rational thought that emphasizes development in technology and capitalism. One of its most important parts, which is today rendered as sociology of religion, was origi- nally conceived of as studies into Wirtschaftsethik, eco- nomic ethics (Weber 1988a). The problems such as climate change are unable to be addressed because of the influence of the iron cage that constrains our thought and behavior i.e. Max Weber dealt with problems of economic sociology in almost all of his work. It was this very phenomenon that Weber called an ‘iron cage’.Įven today the iron cage made up of techno-rational thought, practices, capitalism and economic relationship shows no sign of disintegrating anytime soon. This bureaucratic social structure, and the values, beliefs, and worldviews that supported and sustained it, and the technological and economic relationship that grew out of capitalist production, became the main forces to shaping social life. Weber explained that as the force of Protestantism decreased in social life over time, the system of capitalism remained, as did the social structure and principles of bureaucracy that had grown along with it. Max Weber’s concept of the ‘iron cage’ is even more relevant today than when he first wrote about it in 1905. “Socioeconomic status adds another layer to it, but that’s not the thing that’s driving a lot of the behaviors that our young people are experiencing,” she said. We felt that if success were important in any area of life, it was supremely important in our role as parents. Sandra and I were consumed with a desire to help him. Athletically, he was small, skinny, and uncoordinated-swinging his baseball bat, for example, almost before the ball was even pitched. Socially he was immature, often embarrassing those closest to him. He was doing poorly academically he didn’t even know how to follow the instructions on the tests, let alone do well on them. One of our sons was having a very difficult time in school. These are deep problems, painful problems-problems that quick fix approaches can’t solve.Ī few years ago, my wife Sandra and I were struggling with this kind of concern. We’ve gone to counseling we’ve tried a number of things, but we just can’t seem to rekindle the feeling we used to have. We don’t fight or anything we just don’t love each other anymore. I always wonder what other people really think of me and my ideas. I think through each situation and I really feel the ideas I come up with are usually the best for everyone. Most of the time, I can even do it by influencing others to come up with the solution I want. I know, in almost any interaction, I can control the outcome. I see my friends or relatives achieve some degree of success or receive some recognition, and I smile and congratulate them enthusiastically. I’d really like to think there was meaning in my life, that somehow things were different because I was here. But sometimes I wonder if what I’m doing will make any difference in the long run. Why can’t children do their work cheerfully and without being reminded? But to get them to do anything, I have to supervise every move… and put up with complaining every step of the way. I want to teach my children the value of work. They’ve helped some, but I still don’t feel I’m living the happy, productive, peaceful life I want to live. I’ve attended time management seminars and I’ve tried half a dozen different planning systems. I feel pressured and hassled all day, every day, seven days a week. No matter what I try, he won’t listen to me. My teenage son is rebellious and on drugs. Why can’t I train them to be independent and responsible-or find employees who can be? I think if I were home sick for a day, they’d spend most of their time gabbing at the water fountain. I expect a lot out of my employees and I work hard to be friendly toward them and to treat them right. I’ve taken course after course on effective management training. I just can’t seem to keep a promise I make to myself. I read all the new information, I set goals, I get myself all psyched up with a positive mental attitude and tell myself I can do it. I know I’m overweight, and I really want to change. I’ve started a new diet-for the fifth time this year. I’m not even sure I know myself and what’s really important to me. I don’t know my wife and children anymore. But it’s cost me my personal and family life. I’ve set and met my career goals and I’m having tremendous professional success. I suspect some of the problems they have shared with me may be familiar to you. In more than 25 years of working with people in business, university, and marriage and family settings, I have come in contact with many individuals who have achieved an incredible degree of outward success, but have found themselves struggling with an inner hunger, a deep need for personal congruency and effectiveness and for healthy, growing relationships with other people.
