![]() ![]() PURE Theatre also brought back their popular Last Rites for a one-night performance. ![]() 2019 brought us theatre productions from Charleston Black Theatre with Southern Boys, PURE Theatre with Choir Boy, Miss Dessa from Art Forms and Theatre Concepts and Real Woman Blues written and directed by Samelia Adams. Featuring a night with Quiana Parler and Friends at Memminger Auditorium, moving gallery exhibitions by Synthia Saint James and Andrew Feiler at City Gallery, and partnering with Black Ink: The Charleston African-American Book Festival. MOJA Festival 2019 highlighted the diverse artistry of African American and Caribbean artists. We are proud to have offered an alternative version of MOJA amidst a time of isolation and worry, and carry forward many lessons from a year of disruption and displacement. This book was the Fourth Grade Readout selection for 2020, with over 1,000 copies of the book given to area elementary school students and a virtual read-aloud by Jonathan Green viewed by thousands more. MOJA also presented, in partnership with the Charleston 350 Commemoration and City Gallery, an exhibition of Jonathan Green’s artwork for the children’s book, “The Freedom Ship of Robert Smalls,” by Louise Meriwether. In spite of the challenges, MOJA partnered with local artists to present livestreamed and on-demand concert watch parties, working with artists including Gino Castillo, Ranky Tanky, and the Charleston Music Hall’s “Around the Bend” concert, The Legacy of Motown: Charlton Singleton and Friends, featuring Quiana Parler. Musical offerings included An Evening of Jazz with Da’rrell Ravenell and Friends at the Dock Street while local sensation Charlton Singleton and Friends presented WonderVerse: The Music of Stevie Wonder at Festival Hall. Lowcountry Voices took down the house with “Hymnology II” at Greater Luke AME while the “Back Home Gospel Hour” radiated through Second Presbyterian Church. MOJA Festival 2022 featured exquisite dance by Harambee Dance Company as they presented “Origin” at the Dock Street Theatre and collaborated with Annex Dance Company for a presentation at the James Island Arts and Cultural Center. ![]()
